shark cartilage modulates immune responses in stage iii breast cancer patients

چکیده
introduction: shark cartilage has been shown to have some inhibitory effects on angiogenesis, metastasis, cell adhesion and proteolysis. patients and methods: in this study, we evaluated the effect of shark cartilage on immune response in three treatment session of 3 weeks, 6 weeks and 12 weeks on stage iii invasive ductal carcinoma patients (n=15) compared to patients treated with a starch placebo (n=15). results: the results indicated a significant increase after an initial 3 weeks treatment period in the level of ifnγ, but no significant decrease in the level of il-4 before and after the treatment with shark cartilage. after 6 weeks, we noticed a significant increase (p<0.05) in the level of ifnγ, but no significant increase in the level of il-4 was observed after the treatment with shark cartilage. after 12 weeks, a significant increase in the level of ifnγ and a significant decrease in the level of il-4 after the treatment with shark cartilage was observed; while there was no significant difference in the levels of both ifnγ and il-4 at 3, 6 and 12 weeks treatment in the placebo group. we also evaluated the lymphocytes proliferation in pre and post treatments with shark cartilage or a placebo. our findings showed a significant increase in lymphocyte proliferation in the three-week treatment. conclusion: it is concluded that shark cartilage can stimulate immune response in a short period of time after treatment with it and modulate immune response in longer treatment duration toward th1 cytokine pattern.

The effect of oral consumption of shark cartilage on the cellular immune responses of cancer patients
Background: Shark cartilage is one of the complementary medicines for cancer patients that inhibits tumor progression by several mechanisms. There is not sufficient evidence on its effects on human immune system thereby we investigated its modulatory effects on some cellular immune response parameters in breast cancer patients. Material and methods: After preparation of shark cartilage powder ...
متن کاملThe immunomodulatory effects of shark cartilage on the mouse and human immune system
Background: Sharks get cancer rarely. A major difference between these animals and other species is that sharks have a great amount of cartilaginous tissue. Immunomodulatory effects of the cartilage of some species (cow) have been proved. Because the immune system has a major role in the defense of the body against cancer, we studied the effects of shark cartilage on the mouse and human immune...
متن کاملPhase I study of alphaviral vector (AVX701) in colorectal cancer patients: comparison of immune responses in stage III and stage IV patients
Background AVX701 is an alphaviral replicon particle vaccine expressing a modified carcinoembryonic antigen gene (CEA (6D)). We previously reported the preliminary results of a Phase I/II study of AVX701 in metastatic colorectal cancer patients (Morse, J Clin Invest. 2010; 120: 3234–3241). Herein, we now report long-term survival for these patients and compare their T cell and antibody response...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Breast Self-examination and the Disease Stage in Detection Time among Patients with Breast Cancer in Yazd
Introduction: breast cancer, as the most common cancer among women, is controllable if it is diagnosed at the early stages. Breast self- examination is a simple method for early detection. One of the most important effective factors on the cancer-related mortality is the defection stage. This study was conducted to determine the relationship between breast self-examination and the disease stage...
متن کاملRapid Health Technology Assessment of Oncotype DX in Patients with Early-Stage Breast Cancer
Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Patients are treated with chemotherapy initially, and if not chemically treated, the risk of recurrence of the disease increases yearly. Therefore, methods for identifying patients for whom chemotherapy would be most beneficial are very important. The Oncotype DX test is a prognostic assay that predicts the likelihood of breast can...
متن کاملDocetaxel as neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with stage III breast cancer.
Optimal management of locally advanced breast cancer (stage III) generally includes a combination of primary chemotherapy followed by surgery (if feasible), and local radiotherapy and adjuvant chemotherapy with or without hormonal therapy. An ongoing phase II study is being performed to evaluate the use of 4 cycles of 100 mg/m2 of docetaxel (Taxotere) administered as a 1-hour intravenous infusi...
